The Marinière: History and Evolution of an Iconic Garment
The marinière is today much more than a simple striped top: it represents a cultural symbol, a stylistic reference, and (above all) a garment steeped in history.
To understand its origin, we must go back several centuries, to a time when the sea dictated both clothing rules and practical customs.
This now essential garment has spanned eras and universes, inspiring great fashion designers, as well as modern and decidedly sportswear pieces, such as our men's rugby marinières.
Practical Maritime Origins
The history of the marinière begins within the French navy.
As early as the 19th century, sailors adopted a striped shirt, apparently for a very pragmatic reason: the horizontal stripes made it easier to spot a sailor who had fallen overboard. At that time, every detail had meaning, from the width of the stripes to their arrangement on the fabric.
The first official regulation appeared in 1858. It defined the garment as a "white knitted shirt striped with blue," with a precise number of stripes: 21 on the body, and 14 on each sleeve.
This garment then became an integral part of the sailors' uniform, appreciated for its robustness, breathability, and visibility at sea.
A Rapidly Growing Popularity
Over time, it gradually left the purely maritime world. Travelers, artists, and athletes adopted this simple and iconic garment.
Its popularity grew particularly in the 20th century, when fashion became more interested in marine aesthetics, from Coco Chanel to Jean-Paul Gaultier.
We also remember the French national football team, who wore a marinière-patterned jersey in 2011!
The marinière is now found in different colors, from red to green, yellow, or multi-colored, and continues to reinvent itself: a pocket is added to the chest, a discreet logo, or it is worked into a sweater and t-shirt form.

Its clean silhouette, authentic appeal, and graphic stripes appeal to a wide audience. Over time, the marinière has become a symbol: that of freedom, effortless style, and a decidedly French spirit.
The Marinière: A Garment of Character Above All
The strength of this garment lies in its ability to transcend trends without losing its DNA.
Even though its history is intimately linked to the maritime world, it easily adapts to different environments. It is found as much in everyday outfits as in a sports or lifestyle wardrobe.
This balance between authenticity and modernity makes it a timeless piece.
It recalls the values of simplicity, robustness, and natural elegance, all traits that resonate with the world of rugby: a sport made of commitment, solidarity, and strong identity.
